Aggie Pop’s road to World Domination
“I never liked the idea of fame and fortune; I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse…”
The Rock n Roll queen of the century was not always the queen. Like always, there was a long winding road that led her towards it. Aggie, here we come!
Aggie Pop is leaning on a wall holding a can of beer in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. Her sold-out concert in Bangkok has just finished, and her fan’s screamings have eventually stopped. How did it go? “Not bad. I had a fan come up to me saying she loved PJ Harvey, and that I reminded him of her! Not a bad compliment eh?”
That’s how hot she is. You know how it feels to drink a hot cup of coffee in a sauna wearing a jumper and leather trousers? Boiling. She may be becoming even hotter than Harvey. Nowadays, female solo artists all follow the same style; love, hate, break ups etc. with Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Meghan Trainor topping the billboard of female artists. Aggie Pop has brought Rock n roll back to life. But was she always this cool, Rock n Roll Goddess?
She may seem like a charming young girl, but life was never like this before. “I was brought up by my single unemployed father in the suburbs of Tokyo. I loved my dad. Although we didn’t have any money, I enjoyed my life there. I hated school though. My first day of school in my hand-me-down robes and second hand books wasn’t particularly nice. It was a rough school so you had to fight to reach the top. I fought well.” She grins slightly. Her first guitar was a present on her ninth birthday from her dad. A second hand guitar with a broken string. “It was the best gift ever. I played it all the time with five strings. I couldn’t get it repaired until I was fifteen.” She claims she still uses five strings at times. It wasn’t a brilliant start. But look where that’s led her now. The top.
“How did you enter the celebrity world?” I ask. “I never liked the idea of fame and fortune.”she replies. “ I used to play a lot on the streets and the underground, and collected a bit of money by doing so. That’s how I got my guitar repaired.” She had started to play on the streets as she said, at the age of fifteen when she found a drummer and a bass guitarist to play together. That’s how they formed a band, and that’s how she was noticed by Julian Connors, her manager-to-be.“He came up to me one day and said he loved my songs I had written, and that he would like to sign it.” He is the key to Aggie Pop’s success. It is thanks to him that we’re able to listen to her fabulous music right now on the radio. “But if you didn’t want fame and fortune, what motivated you to follow him?” I ask. “I refused at first.” What!? “I refused because as you say, I didn’t want fame or fortune. But as they say in the Godfather; ‘I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse’”we laugh together. “He said that if I wouldn’t let anyone sign my record, he would steal my guitar away from me. It did feel like a joke, but I was still afraid that he will actually steal it, so I had no choice. I still didn’t have money to buy another one. He was never going to take my guitar away from me. Never!” she says strongly. I could feel all her love toward her dad as she said that. If it weren’t for her kind-hearted father and strong-willed manager, Aggie Pop will not be sharing her amazing album with us.
“Now that you’ve reached fame and fortune without willing to do so, how do you feel about it?” I ask. “I don’t know how to feel about it.” she replies, twitching her face slightly. “I didn’t want to reach this point because I thought I would never be able to lead a normal life and probably not see my dad as easily as I always could. Now that I’ve reached this point, it’s not that bad. It’s all up to you in the end isn’t it? I mean, what’s normal? A normal life could be anything. I’m doing something that gives joy to people. And I don’t mind doing so.” That was the most cool Aggie I had ever seen. She says it straight and leaves the concert hall towards her next destination where another massive number of fans await. Seeya Aggie Pop and we all wish you the best of luck for the future xxx (Although I have a very strong feeling you wouldn’t be needing any!)
